Best of Sunday Night Football: Week 11 Chargers vs. Chiefs

Chiefs win on last second field goal as Chargers attempt to rally from behind

Justin Herbert led a furious 4th quarter comeback before Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker hit a game winner as time expired to give Kansas City the win.

The Kansas City Chiefs managed to hold off a late game rally by the Los Angeles Chargers to improve to 8-2, and keep pace with the Buffalo Bills for the top seed in the AFC.

The game was tied at 21 heading into the 4th quarter, but the Chiefs were able to drive down the field and take a 28-21 late in the 4th. The Chargers weren't done there however, and quickly marched down the field and tied the game once again at 28.

With seconds remaining on the clock the Chiefs had one more opportunity, and took full advantage of it. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster for a big gain that set up kicker Harrison Butker for a game winning field goal.

Justin Herbert's record breaking performance falls short

Despite the loss, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert put together one of the best performances by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. Herbert threw for 350 yards and 2 touchdowns passing. He also rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown. Herbert finished the day with 373 total yards which is the most by a rookie quarterback in NFL history.

Herbert's record setting performance was not enough however, as the Chargers failed to come up with a stop on the Chiefs final drive of the game.

Chiefs defense steps up

While the Chiefs offense has been getting most of the headlines this season, it was the Chiefs defense that came up big against the Chargers. The defense forced two turnovers in the game, and also had 4 sacks on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

The Chiefs also limited the Chargers to just 75 rushing yards, well below their season average of 120 rushing yards per game.

Injury update

The Chiefs escaped the game relatively healthy, with only starting cornerback L'Jarius Sneed suffering an ankle injury. Sneed is expected to miss some time, but the Chiefs are hopeful that he will be able to return before the playoffs.

The Chargers were not as fortunate, as starting wide receiver Keenan Allen suffered a hamstring injury. Allen is expected to miss multiple weeks, which is a big loss for the Chargers offense.
