Los Angeles rolls to third straight win, advances to AFC Championship game
The Los Angeles Chargers ended the Philadelphia Eagles’ season with a dominant 49-28 victory on Saturday night in the NFC Divisional Round. The Chargers, who also beat the Eagles in the playoffs last season, took control of the game early and never looked back.
Herbert shines, Ekeler leads the way
Justin Herbert was brilliant for the Chargers, completing 23 of 31 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for a touchdown in three consecutive playoff games.
Austin Ekeler was also unstoppable for the Chargers, rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He also caught six passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Eagles fall short, Hurts injured
The Eagles fought hard, but they were simply outmatched by the Chargers. Jalen Hurts was injured in the second quarter and did not return. Gardner Minshew replaced Hurts and played well, but he was unable to lead the Eagles to a comeback.
The Chargers will now advance to the AFC Championship game, where they will face the winner of Sunday's game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills.
Chargers dominate from the start
The Chargers set the tone for the game early, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive. They would go on to score touchdowns on their first four drives of the game, building a 28-0 lead.
The Eagles finally got on the board with a touchdown late in the second quarter, but the Chargers answered right back with a touchdown of their own to take a 35-7 lead into halftime.
Eagles fight back, but Chargers hold on
The Eagles came out strong in the second half, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive. They would go on to score two more touchdowns in the third quarter, cutting the Chargers’ lead to 35-28.
However, the Chargers’ defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, forcing the Eagles to punt on their first two drives. The Chargers then put the game away with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, sealing the 49-28 victory.
What's next for the Chargers?
The Chargers will now face the winner of Sunday's game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. The game will be played next Sunday, January 29th, at 3:00 PM ET.
The Chargers are looking to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 1994.
