Cher not only opened up about her relationship with Sonny Bono, but she also explained why it took some time for her to warm up to him.

Cher and the late Sonny Bono are regarded as one of the most famous music couples, but their relationship wasn’t an instant success. According to Cher, it took some time for her to warm up to him. As a matter of fact, she wasn’t “particularly attracted” to Sonny.

“He wasn’t the kind of person I would immediately go for,” Cher told People magazine while discussing her new documentary, Cher & the Loneliest Elephant.

Cher, 76, explained that she initially thought that Bono, who died in 1998, “was a little bit of a hustler.” However, her feelings toward him changed over time.

From business partners to lovers

Cher and Bono initially met in 1962, and according to Cher, they weren’t romantically involved for the first two years of their friendship.

“We didn’t date or anything. We were just friends,” Cher explained, adding that their relationship turned romantic in 1964.

Bono and Cher married in 1969 and welcomed a son, Chaz Bono, in 1969. They were one of the most famous couples in the 1970s, thanks to their hit songs, including “I Got You Babe” and “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves.”

They divorced in 1975, but remained close until Bono’s tragic skiing accident in 1998. His death left Cher devastated. She later said that she had never loved anyone as much as she loved Bono.

In her interview with People, Cher said that she misses Bono “every day,” and she still remembers him fondly.

“He was a great guy,” she said. “I was so lucky to have him in my life.”
