Chicago Bears acquire Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders in exchange for Chase Claypool
Trade details
The Chicago Bears have acquired defensive end Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders in exchange for wide receiver Chase Claypool, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Bears will also send a 2023 second-round pick to the Commanders as part of the deal, according to Schefter.
Sweat's impact on the Bears defense
Sweat is a 26-year-old defensive end who has been one of the most productive pass rushers in the NFL since entering the league in 2019. He has recorded 20 sacks in the past two seasons, including 7.5 sacks in 10 games this season.
Sweat is a versatile player who can line up at either defensive end or outside linebacker. He is a good athlete with a strong burst off the line of scrimmage and a variety of pass-rushing moves.
Sweat's addition gives the Bears a much-needed boost to their pass rush. The Bears have struggled to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season, recording just 15 sacks in 10 games.
Claypool's departure from the Bears
Claypool is a 24-year-old wide receiver who was traded to the Bears from the Pittsburgh Steelers in October 2022. He has been a productive receiver in his career, catching 158 passes for 2,110 yards and 19 touchdowns in three seasons.
However, Claypool has struggled to find his footing in Chicago. He has just 14 catches for 197 yards and one touchdown in seven games with the Bears.
The Bears are hoping that the trade will allow Claypool to reach his full potential. The Commanders are hoping that Sweat can help them improve their defense, which is currently ranked 31st in the NFL in points allowed per game.
