Chelsea Schools Closed Due to Proximity to Fire
Several schools in Chelsea, Massachusetts, were closed on Tuesday, July 11, after a massive 9-alarm fire broke out at a warehouse on 6th Street.
According to the Chelsea Fire Department, the fire began at around 1:30 a.m. and quickly spread to neighboring buildings, including a plastics recycling facility and a lumber yard.
Evacuations Ordered as Fire Spreads
The fire forced the evacuation of several homes and businesses in the area, including the Mary O'Malley Senior Center and the Boys & Girls Club of Chelsea.
The Chelsea Public Schools announced that all schools in the city would be closed on Tuesday due to the proximity of the fire and the need for emergency personnel to access the area.
Firefighters Battle Blaze for Hours
Firefighters from Chelsea and surrounding communities battled the blaze for hours, finally bringing it under control at around 7:30 a.m.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it may have started in a storage area of the warehouse.
No Injuries Reported
No injuries have been reported in the fire, and all residents and employees have been accounted for.
