Heatwave and Thunderstorm Warnings Issued Across South Africa
South Africa's Weather Service has issued heatwave and thunderstorm warnings for several provinces as temperatures soar and severe weather conditions approach.
The heatwave warning is in effect for the Northern Cape, Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo provinces. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-40s Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in some areas, with heat index values feeling even hotter due to high humidity.
The heatwave is expected to last for several days, with little relief in sight. Residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible, drink plenty of fluids, and take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration.
The thunderstorm warning is in effect for the same provinces as the heatwave warning, as well as the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. Severe thunderstorms are expected, with heavy rain, hail, and lightning possible.
The thunderstorms could also bring strong winds and localized flooding. Residents are advised to be prepared for severe weather and to take precautions to stay safe, such as avoiding flooded areas and seeking shelter indoors during thunderstorms.
The South African Weather Service is monitoring the situation closely and will issue updates as necessary. Residents are urged to follow the advice of local authorities and to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts.
In addition to the heatwave and thunderstorm warnings, the South African Weather Service has also issued a special advisory for the Western Cape province. The advisory warns of strong winds and high seas along the coast, as well as the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.
