Massive fire forces closure of Chelsea elementary schools on Monday
Firefighters battled a massive fire at the Mary O. Cook School in Chelsea
Chelsea firefighters were called to the Mary O. Cook School at 600 Washington Avenue at 5:42 a.m. Monday, and arrived to find heavy fire showing from the second floor of the building.
The fire quickly spread to the third floor and the roof. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the original building, but not before it caused extensive damage.
The school will be closed for the rest of the week
Chelsea School Superintendent Dr. Almi Abeyta announced Monday afternoon that the Mary O. Cook School will be closed for the rest of the week due to the fire.
Students will be given remote learning assignments for the rest of the week, and the district will provide transportation for students who need it.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chelsea Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
