Norwich fan set to lead Samoa into historic clash with New Zealand

Chris Vui's side to face Kiwis in opening match of Rugby League World Cup.

A Norwich City fan is set to lead Samoa into battle against New Zealand in the opening match of the Rugby League World Cup.

Chris Vui, who grew up in Norwich and played for the Canaries' academy, has been appointed head coach of the Samoan national team.

Vui, who also played for Hull KR, Huddersfield and Salford, will take charge of Samoa for the first time in the tournament opener against the Kiwis on October 15.

Samoa have never beaten New Zealand in a rugby league Test match, but Vui is confident his side can cause an upset.

"It's a massive challenge, but we're going into the game with a lot of belief," said Vui.

"We know New Zealand are one of the best teams in the world, but we're going to give it everything we've got."

Vui's appointment as Samoa coach has been welcomed by the Samoan Rugby League Federation.

"We're delighted to have Chris on board," said federation chairman Tagaloa Fa'afouina Su'a.

"He's a top-quality coach with a lot of experience, and we're confident he can lead Samoa to success."

Vui's Samoa side will also face Tonga and England in Group A of the Rugby League World Cup.

The tournament will be held in England from October 15 to November 19.
