Capitals' Ovechkin Nets Three, Thompson Shines with 40 Saves in 5-2 Victory
Alex Ovechkin scored his second hat-trick of the season, and Darcy Kuemper made 40 saves to lead the Washington Capitals to a 5-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night.
Ovechkin opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period, and he added two more goals in the third period, including an empty-netter.
Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitry Orlov also scored for the Capitals, who have won three of their last four games.
William Karlsson and Shea Theodore scored for the Golden Knights, who have lost three of their last four games.
Ovechkin's hat-trick gives him 803 goals for his career, moving him into sole possession of third place on the NHL's all-time scoring list.
Thompson was outstanding in goal for the Capitals, making several key saves to keep the Golden Knights at bay.
The Capitals will host the New York Islanders on Thursday night, while the Golden Knights will host the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.
