Rocket successfully launched by University of Southern California student
USC student designs and builds first-ever student-led rocket to reach space
Ambitious project demonstrates the power of education and innovation
A University of Southern California (USC) student has successfully launched the first-ever student-led rocket into space. The historic launch took place on Tuesday, June 21, 2023, from the Mojave Desert in California.
The rocket, named "Voyager," was designed and built by a team of USC students led by senior aerospace engineering major, Peter Beck. The team worked on the project for over two years, overcoming numerous challenges to achieve their goal.
"This is an incredible achievement for our team and for USC," said Beck. "It shows what is possible when students are given the opportunity to pursue their passions and work together to solve real-world problems."
The launch of Voyager was a major milestone for USC's aerospace engineering program. It is the first time that a student-led rocket has successfully reached space. The launch also marks a significant step forward in the development of low-cost access to space.
"This launch is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students," said Professor Elihu Spencer, chair of the USC Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. "It is also a testament to the power of education and innovation. We are proud of our students for their accomplishments and we look forward to seeing what they achieve in the future."
