Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard recently shared an update about the torn pectoral muscle injury that he suffered in Week 8 of the 2023 season. Hubbard was initially expected to miss the remainder of the season but was able to return for the playoffs.
Turns out, the injury very nearly caused him to miss the entire 2024 season as well.
After the doctor told him the full extent of his injury, Hubbard admitted he was "heartbroken and crushed."
He said: "I didn't know if I was going to be able to come back this year. I didn't know if I was going to be able to come back next year. I was just really heartbroken. I felt like my season was over, and I felt like my career was in jeopardy."
Fortunately for Hubbard, his doctor told him that he would be able to make a full recovery. There was just one condition: he would need to undergo surgery.
Hubbard will always have some pain in his pec, but he played through the pain in the playoffs and helped lead the Bengals to the Super Bowl.
The Bengals ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl, but Hubbard said that he was proud of the team's effort. He also said that he was grateful for the opportunity to play in the game.
"It was an incredible experience," Hubbard said. "I'm so grateful that I was able to be a part of it. I'm so proud of my team. We fought hard, and we came up just short. But I'm proud of what we accomplished."
Hubbard is now looking ahead to the 2024 season. He said that he is excited to get back on the field and help the Bengals win a Super Bowl.
"I'm feeling good," Hubbard said. "I'm feeling strong. I'm ready to get back out there and play football. I'm excited for the season. I'm excited to see what we can accomplish."
