Sri Lanka's spin attack led by Maheesh Theekshana and Ramesh Mendis restricted New Zealand to a total of 209 runs in the first innings of the ongoing second Test match in Galle.

Theekshana, who was named Man of the Match in the first Test, continued his impressive form by taking four wickets, while Mendis chipped in with three.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and elected to bat first, but the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener Will Young was trapped in front by Theekshana for 28, while Henry Nicholls was caught behind off Mendis for 15.

Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway offered some resistance, adding 49 runs for the third wicket. However, Mitchell was eventually caught at short leg off Theekshana for 22, while Conway was bowled by Mendis for 34.

The Black Caps were reeling at 121/5 when Chapman came to the crease. The left-hander played a captain's knock, hitting 76 runs off 109 balls, including 11 fours and a six. He found support from Michael Bracewell, who scored 25, but the rest of the New Zealand batting lineup failed to contribute.

Theekshana finished with figures of 4/69, while Mendis took 3/56. Dhananjaya de Silva also chipped in with two wickets.

In response, Sri Lanka reached 108/1 at stumps on day one, with Oshada Fernando unbeaten on 50 and Dimuth Karunaratne on 46.
