Toronto beats Winnipeg 24-23 on a Rouge

Unlikely MVP Nick Arbuckle leads team to victory with game-winning field goal

The Toronto Argonauts are Grey Cup champions for the first time since 2017, after defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-23 in a thrilling game on Sunday.

The game was decided on a rouge with no time remaining on the clock, after Winnipeg conceded a safety to give Toronto the winning points.

Argos quarterback Nick Arbuckle was named the game's Most Valuable Player, after throwing for 334 yards and a touchdown, a game winning field goal, and running for another score.

Arbuckle was a surprise starter for Toronto, after replacing injured starter McLeod Bethel-Thompson earlier in the playoffs.

The Bombers had a chance to win the game in regulation, but kicker Marc Liegghio missed a 47-yard field goal attempt with just over a minute remaining.

Toronto then drove the ball down the field and kicked a game-tying field goal with no time remaining to force overtime.

In overtime, Winnipeg won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball.

However, the Bombers were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt.

Toronto then took over possession and drove the ball down the field before Arbuckle kicked the game-winning field goal.

The victory is Toronto's 18th Grey Cup championship, moving them into a tie with the Edmonton Eskimos for the most all-time.

It is also the first Grey Cup championship for Argos head coach Ryan Dinwiddie, who is in his first season with the team.

For Arbuckle, the victory is a redemption story after he was released by the Calgary Stampeders earlier this season.

Arbuckle said after the game that he is grateful for the opportunity to play for the Argos and that he is proud of his team's effort.

"I'm just so happy for our team," Arbuckle said. "We've been through a lot this year, but we never gave up. We always believed in ourselves, and we knew that we could win this game. "
