Bears Offensive Lineman Ryan Bates Set to Make First Start at LG

Veteran lineman set to step into starting role for injured Teven Jenkins

Bates has been a key reserve for the Bears the last two seasons

Chicago Bears offensive lineman Ryan Bates is set to make his first career start at left guard in Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Bates, 25, has been a key reserve for the Bears the last two seasons, starting four games at right guard in 2021.

He will now be tasked with replacing Teven Jenkins, who suffered a back injury in last week's loss to the New York Giants.

Bates is a versatile lineman who can play both guard and tackle.

He is also known for his toughness and physicality.

"Ryan is a tough, physical player who has a lot of experience," Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said.

"He's smart and knows our system well. We're confident that he can step in and do a good job for us."

Bates is excited about the opportunity to start.

"I'm just trying to do my job and help the team win," Bates said.

"I'm confident in my abilities and I'm ready to go out there and play hard."

The Bears are hoping that Bates can help provide some stability to an offensive line that has struggled at times this season.

The Bears are currently 3-4 and in need of a win to stay in the playoff race.
