Seahawks Thought They’d Draft Deebo Samuel And DK Metcalf In 2019

They Had No Idea Both Would Be Available

The Seahawks had a great draft in 2019, landing two future Pro Bowlers in wide receivers DK Metcalf and Deebo Samuel. But they never expected to get both players.

In a recent interview, Seahawks general manager John Schneider revealed that the team thought Samuel would be long gone by the time they picked at No. 21 overall. They were also surprised that Metcalf was still available at No. 64.

“We thought Deebo would be gone by the time we picked,” Schneider said. “We had him ranked as a top-15 player.”

“And we thought DK would be gone by the time we picked in the second round,” Schneider added. “We had him ranked as a top-50 player.”

How They Got Both Players

So how did the Seahawks manage to land both Samuel and Metcalf? It was a combination of good luck and good scouting.

The Seahawks were able to trade down from No. 21 to No. 29 and still get Samuel. They also got a fourth-round pick in the deal.

The Seahawks were then able to trade up from No. 64 to No. 69 to get Metcalf. They gave up a fifth-round pick in the deal.

Both trades were considered to be good value at the time. And they have turned out to be even better in retrospect.

The Impact Of Samuel And Metcalf

Samuel and Metcalf have both been key contributors to the Seahawks’ success in recent years. Samuel has been a dynamic playmaker on offense, while Metcalf has been a dominant force on defense.

In 2021, Samuel had 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns. He was also named to his first Pro Bowl.

In 2021, Metcalf had 1,048 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He was also named to his first Pro Bowl.

The Seahawks are lucky to have both Samuel and Metcalf on their team. They are two of the most talented young players in the NFL.
