South Africa Qualify For World Test Championship Final
Proteas crush Pakistan to book place at The Oval
South Africa have qualified for the final of the ICC World Test Championship after they claimed a crushing victory over Pakistan in Karachi.
The Proteas needed just one win to join Australia in the final and they wrapped up a 2-0 series victory with a seven-wicket triumph in the second Test. They'll take on the Aussies in the final at The Oval on 7-11 June.
Kagiso Rabada was the standout performer for South Africa in Karachi, taking 11 wickets in the match. He removed both Pakistan openers early on day two before accounting for Pakistan's second innings top-scorer Babar Azam.
Pakistan started the final day needing 314 runs to make South Africa bat again but they lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually dismissed for 298. Hasan Ali top-scored with 51.
South Africa then chased down the remaining 40 runs in just 10.1 overs. Sarel Erwee finished unbeaten on 21, while Temba Bavuma made 14 not out.
The victory is a major achievement for South Africa, who have struggled in Test cricket in recent years. They had won just one of their previous nine Tests before the series against Pakistan and they were ranked seventh in the world.
Their victory was also a blow to Australia, who had been hoping to qualify for the final. Australia needed South Africa to lose the series to Pakistan, so the Proteas' victory means the Aussies have to wait for another chance to win the World Test Championship.
The final between South Africa and Australia will be a fascinating contest. Both teams are in good form and they will both be determined to win the inaugural World Test Championship title.
